BABICH THE PATRIARCH 2011

The nose is brimming with blackberries, black currents and forest fruits which are joined by plum and tasty savoury notes. Liquorish and spice aromas intermingle perfectly. The palate is sweet and abundantly fruitful on entry developing complex savoury notes that mingle delightfully with the fruit. Gentle oak supports layers of cocoa and leather. The tannins are soft, the weight full-ish and the finish is long with lingering dark berry fruits

The Patriarch is our flagship red wine, grown on our Gimblett Gravels ‘Irongate’ vineyard in Hawke’s Bay and made in honour of the company founder and New Zealand wine industry pioneer, Josip Babich. With this wine we allow ourselves complete flexibility in order to make the best we can – we are not committed to a particular variety or blend and crop levels are very restricted.

Grapes:
Merlot 46%, Cabernet Sauvignon 35%, Malbec 19%

Region:
Hawke's Bay - Gimblett Gravels

Recommended Food:
Ideal with roasted red meats. It makes a good partner for a whole fillet beef, roasted rare. Also perfect with a tasty winter casseroled stew.

Recommended Cellaring:
4-15 years

Production Notes:
Select crop thinned parcels of fruit were hand harvested then fermented in small open vats and hand plunged. After an extended maceration period the new wines were drained to French oak barriques (45% new), to mature.  After several rack and returns and extensive tasting trials the Patriarch was blended after 12 months then returned to oak. The wine spent a total of 15 months in oak.

Technical Notes:
Alcohol: 13.5%
TA: 5.9g/l
pH: 3.63
Residual Sugar: Dry

Tasting Notes:
Dark and sweet with blueberry to the fore, followed by a touch of liquorice.  Smooth, opulent entry to the palate, dense and concentrated dark fruits with sweet spice and tar on the finish.  Notes of blackberry and vanilla linger.

"Concentrated and engaging bouquet with ripe moody dark red berry fruits, sweet violets and plum, blackberry and vanilla pod; plenty of new oak and bold masculine complexity. On the palate – tense, youthful, concentrated and ripe with juicy dark berry and plum flavours, full-bodied, oaky and toasty, medium+ to high tannins, medium+ acidity, lengthy finish with complexity and presence."
